RelCalc and
Windows Vista The Microsoft Windows Vista operating system includes hundreds of new and revised features, in areas such as user interface, networking, printing, etc. Microsoft's primary objective with Windows Vista was to improve system security. The most visible new Vista security feature is User Account Control (UAC), a security technology that limits access to critical system resources, even when the user has administrative privileges. With UAC, when an action requiring administrative rights is requested, the user is prompted for an administrator name and password; in cases where the user is already logged in as an administrator, the user is still prompted to confirm the action. The following notes address installing and running RelCalc on Windows Vista. Installing
RelCalc on Windows Vista - Installation Rights: The RelCalc setup installation program needs to run with administrative rights. The Vista UAC system typically detects installation programs and requests elevated administrative rights, so when you start the RelCalc setup program you should be prompted for permission to continue. Note: the Vista UAC "Detect application installation and prompt for elevation" setting is enabled by default, but it can be turned off. If this setting is disabled, the RelCalc setup will NOT be able to properly install RelCalc. Thus, if you do not get a permission prompt when you start the RelCalc setup program, please start it again by right-clicking its icon and choosing the "Run as Administrator" menu item. - Installation Location: Do NOT install RelCalc under the "C:\Program Files" folder, since under the Vista UAC system the "C:\Program Files" folder is a protected location. We recommend installing RelCalc in the default location offered by RelCalc setup. - Electronic Key Device Driver: If you install RelCalc Build 2007.8245 or later from your RelCalc for Windows CD, then a Vista compatible Electronic Key device driver will be installed. You can also download the Electronic Key device driver here. - RelCalc PDF/RTF/TXT Printer Drivers: Note that only the printer drivers installed by RelCalc Build 2007.8245 or later are Vista compatible. Running RelCalc
on Windows Vista - RelCalc User Settings: We save various RelCalc program settings and preferences in an INI file in your "C:\Windows" folder. Since this is a Vista UAC protected folder, the Vista UAC system will actually write the data to a virtualized file copy that is stored under your user profile. Note that if you have multiple user accounts on your Windows Vista machine, and if more than one of the users is using RelCalc, then each user's RelCalc settings are saved to a different virtualized copy. - WinHelp: The RelCalc Help
system uses a Windows subsystem known as WinHelp (32-bit). Microsoft made
the decision not to include the 32-bit WinHelp in Windows Vista. Microsoft
has a Knowledge Base article discussing this subject:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607. This article has a link to
download and install WinHlp32.exe from the Microsoft Download Center: Note: you only need to install WinHlp32.exe once, and you may have already installed it for another program. To test this while running RelCalc, press F1 to get Help: if you get an error message, then proceed with the above. Questions or
